The Inspiration
The Masquerade
The famed Italian city of Venice is often referred to as the “City of Water” or the “City of Masks”, and the Venetian masquerade possesses a rich history dating back to the 12th century. During Carnival, a period of festivity that precedeed the Christian holiday of Lent, the wearing of masks became a local tradition. It allowed Venetians to conceal their social classes, permitting nobles and commoners to mingle anonymously. Masks were to become an integral part of Venetian culture, with various designs indicating different professions, guilds or even specific stock characters within the Carnival tradition. By the 18th century, masquerade balls had transformed into dazzling spectacles of music, dance and theatrical performances. The warm, mysterious scent of amber, combined with the vibrant, playful elegance of mimosa epitomises the essence of Venice’s most enchanting celebration.
“Rising with her tiara of proud towers/
But unto us she hath a spell beyond.”
~ Extract from “Childe Harold’s Pilgramage” by Lord Byron, (1788-1824), stanzas 1-5 which describe Venice.
