The Inspiration
Across cultures, legends abound of mermaids: enigmatic beings, half woman and half fish, who inhabit the ocean. The earliest depiction of such creatures comes from ancient Mesopotamia, where fish-tailed humans were illustrated on cylinder seals as early as 2500 BC. Our contemporary image of mermaids largely stems from European folklore. On the Isle of Man, mermaids are depicted as being especially kind towards humans. One legend tells that an Irish girl by the name of Li Ban transformed into a mermaid after she spent a year living in an underwater sea chamber. In their fluid and often contradictory portrayals – at once seductive and innocent, cunning and trusting, generous and tempestuous – the enduring legend of the mermaid beautifully mirrors the complex and multifaceted nature of womanhood itself.
