The Inspiration
In Hawaiian culture, the origins of the hula are deeply connected to the natural world. Believed to have evolved as a form of storytelling, the hula conveys the history, beliefs, and emotions of the people through intricate movements and gestures which have been passed down through the generations. Laka, the goddess of the forests, is also the goddess of the hula. She is said to be the inspiration for dancers, as well as the power in their movements. Some legends recount that she was also the creator of the sacred dance, having given birth to it on the island of Moloka’i. Other myths tell that the first hula was actually a victory dance performed by the fire goddess Pele after she discovered a safe haven from the sea goddess who pursued her. Regardless of the legend, the natural beauty of Hawaii- its towering volcanic peaks, lush rainforests and pristine coastlines- is deeply woven into the graceful movements of the dance. The hula remains a vibrant expression of creativity and inspiration, echoing the captivating tropical beauty of the island.
