The Inspiration
A Princess’s Retribution
The story of Sleeping Beauty has its roots in medieval folklore, and early written versions of the tale from the 17th century include Giambattista Basile’s “Sun, Moon & Talia” and “La Belle au Bois Dormant” by Charles Perrault. The original narratives presented a significantly darker story than the version which we are familiar with today. In Perrault’s rendition, the valiant prince’s mother is an evil ogress who schemes to first devour the princess, and then the couple’s children after they are born. The ogress ultimately meets a fitting end as a meal for rats and toads. In the Brothers Grimm interpretation, the malevolent fairy who had cursed Briar Rose is condemned to dance in red-hot iron shoes at the couple’s wedding until she perishes. Our unique candle blends the mysterious power of oud, echoing the tale’s theme of dark magic and retribution, with the untamed loveliness of wild rose: perfectly symbolic of the fierce spirit and resilience of the true Briar Rose.
“But lo! The fated hand and heart,
to rend the slumberous curse apart.”
~ Extract from “For the Briar-Rose” by William Morris, (1834-1896).
